It has sometimes been called an area of rigorous fun, and for good reason!

Despite some criticism and scepticism (perhaps a hangover from the self- help movement spawned from humanistic psychology), positive psychology is not about being happy all the time. It does not neglect your highs or lows or your range of emotions and experiences which are part of life’s journey as a human being.

It is however, about how you manage yourself through the ebbs and flows. Positive psychology is about living a full life with a focus on finding more meaning, engagement and moments of positive emotion along the way.

The history

Positive psychology which is backed by scientific research and empirical studies is not a new concept. It does however have a new focus. If we look back through history, we see the values by which we measure what makes life worth living, have been contemplated and considered since the time of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle.

More recently, before WWII, psychologists were studying giftedness, good parenting, resilience, life’s meaning and happiness. In fact prior to WWII, the field of psychology had three distinct missions:

  • Curing mental illness

  • Making people’s lives more productive and fulfilling

  • Nurturing high talent.

This mission was all but lost when many men and women returned from the war completely damaged and broken. This changed the focus of the next 60 years from overall wellbeing to curing illness and alleviating suffering. The result was neglect of the other two missions and of the complete spectrum of human experience.

Many within the field of psychology recognised that a new focus was needed and that sole concentration on the 'disease model' was missing the complete point of the human experience. Now, through this renewed interest we have strategies and interventions that can turn our lives and thinking upside down while building resources and skills that are truly life changing.
